Inside the Regional Heart Center
A-Mazing Cure for Atrial Fibrillation Heart surgeons at Lehigh
Valley Hospital and Health Network are leading the region in curing
atrial fibrillation using the Maze procedure. Atrial fibrillation is a
disorganized quivering of the upper chambers of the heart (atria) that
can cause fainting, stroke, heart failure and even death. The Maze
procedure uses radio-frequency waves to create a pattern of scars
around the two atria to block the electrical circuits that cause
fibrillation. The operation, which takes about 30 minutes, often is
done along with coronary artery bypass or valve replacement surgery.
